What does MCAS stand for? What airplane uses it & what recent crashes involved it?

The Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System is used by the Boeing 737 Max. It can automatically lower the aircraft nose when a sensor indicates that a stall may be imminent. It's been implicated in two recent crashes: Lion Air Flight 610 (Indonesian airline) and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302.
